Free medicines for inmates of Shri Meghji Sojpal Jain Ashram, Mandvi.

Meghji Sojpal Jain Ashram, situated at outskirts of Mandvi Kutch on the Mandvi- Bhuj road, having a campus of around 40 acres of land, is a shelter home for old and niradhar Jain men and women and mentally challenged Jain men and women for last 80 years.

The ashram has given shelter to more than 2000 men and women till now. At present there are more than 140 Jain inmates who are either old or mentally challenged .

During the year 2005-2006,JRD visited Mandvi Kutch many times to oversee the Jirnoddhar work of Shri Chintamani Parswanath Derasar at Dada Ni deri. During one of his visit, Mr Vasa who was manager of the Ashram invited JRD to visit the ashram .

The Ashram has many rooms to keep the inmates including 56 rooms which were specially prepared with iron doors and iron windows to keep mentally challenged violent inmates.

JRD who was a pharmaceutical manufacturer at Vadodara before becoming member of NSE and BSE, realised that if proper psychiatric medical treatment is given to these inmates, their mental health can be improved. So he suggested to the management of Ashram about this solution, but they said that the psychiatric medicines are very costly and they are to be given regularly for a longer period of time which the ashram can not afford.

JRD thought for a while and suggested if he can send these medicines free of cost, will Ashram do the medical treatment well. The ashram Management agreed to do so in consultation with their psychiatrist doctor who visited Ashram from Bhuj.

Since JRD had many friends in Pharmaceutical industry, he requested Sun Pharma, Torrent Pharma and KIVI’s Lab who were manufacturing psychiatric medicines to send these medicines to Jain Ashram and requested them to charge cost price which he will pay to them. However, all these companies appreciated the good work being done by JRD and agreed to donate these medicines free of cost to the Ashram.

The medicines started coming in the year 2006 and the violent psychiatric inmates were given regular dose of medicines as per advise of the doctor.

Within 6 months to One year, most of the violent patients who were chained with iron chains became normal and they were allowed to move outside their rooms and live a normal life.

Seeing this magical improvement, JRD continued to send free medicines with help of mainly Mr Jayeshbhai Patel of KIVI’s Lab, Vadodara for many years from 2006 to 2018.
